MARISA YEAMAN - Roadmap Heart

It doesn’t happen often that a cd title perfectly reflects the mood and contents of that cd but with this Roadmap Heart by the Australian songwriter Marisa Yeaman, it certainly does. The contents primarily deal with love and anything that is connected. As we all know, that can be a lot. The songs on this Roadmap Heart deal with passionate love, failed relationships, infidelity,regret, one night stands that do not deliver the desired results, loneliness….

Since her debut cd Pure Motive her roadmap took her halfway across the world, to Mexico, India, Europe and the US. And you can hear that in the music. It’s not just blues, americana, country and folk but also roots music from India. We hear a sitar in the last song Mantra that makes us think of Harry Manx. Opener 1000 Mile Store and Bonneville are without doubt great country songs, which highlight the pedal steel of Garrett Costigan. I like the sound guitar work by Dave Steel, whether he plays acoustic, electric  or slide. Listen to the live track Old Hotel Phone or Flying North, Silent Murder and Dirty Hands, a true bluesy country rocker, and he also proves that he is totally at ease with the dobro and the blues harp. Another Australian specialist on the blues harp is Ian Collard, of the famous Collard, Greens and Gravy blues trio.

The world trip also took Marisa to Amsterdam, which resulted in the beautiful song Amsterdam Rain. What do all those songwriters find in Amsterdam, that there are so many songs about this town? Desolate is a true-blooded rock song with Marcus Goodwin on lead guitar. Mercy Train and Love From Stone are also fine rocking songs but with a bluesy edge. With this Roadmap Heart Marisa Yeaman has produced  a worthy follow-up for her much-lauded debut Pure Motive. She did mention coming to Europe sometime in 2009. Je komt het niet vaak tegen dat de cd-titel perfect de sfeer en de inhoud van de desbetreffende cd weergeeft, maar met deze Roadmap Heart van de Australische songwriter Marisa Yeaman is dat zeker het geval. Inhoudelijk gaat het voornamelijk over de liefde en alles wat daarmee gepaard kan gaan. En zoals we weten kan dat heel wat zijn. In de songs op deze Roadmap Heart gaat het over passionele liefde, foute relaties, ontrouw, berouw, vluchtige scharrels die niet het gewenste effect blijken te hebben, eenzaamheid...

Sinds haar debuut-cd Pure Motive bracht haar roadmap haar over de halve wereld en zo kwam ze o.a. in Mexico, India, Europa en Amerika terecht. Dat hoor je ook aan de muziek. Zo is er niet alleen blues, americana, country en folk maar ook rootsmuziek uit o.a. India. We horen een sitar in het afsluitende Mantra, dat wat aan Harry Manx doet denken. Opener 1000 Mile Store en Bonneville zijn zonder meer fraaie countrysongs waarop de pedal steel van Garrett Costigan mooi uit de verf komt. Ik hou van het degelijke gitaarwerk van Dave Steel, zowel op akoestische, elektrische of slidegitaar. Luister maar naar de live track Old Hotel Phone of Flying North, Silent Murder en Dirty Hands, een onvervalste bluesy countryrocker. En hij blijkt ook nog eens makkelijk overweg te kunnen met de dobro en de bluesharmonica. Een andere Australische specialist op de bluesharp die komt opduiken is Ian Collard van het befaamde bluestrio Collard, Greens and Gravy.

Die trip rond de wereld heeft haar ook naar Amsterdam gebracht. Dat levert de prachtsong Amsterdam Rain op. Wat hebben al die songwriters toch met Amsterdam, dat er al zoveel songs over deze stad verschenen zijn? Desolate is een pur sang stevige rocksong met Marcus Goodwin op leadgitaar. Mercy Train en Love From Stone zijn eveneens lekkere rockers maar dan wel met een zeer bluesy randje. Met deze Roadmap Heart heeft Marisa Yeaman voor een waardige opvolger gezorgd voor haar zeer geprezen debuut Pure Motive. In 2009 zou ze nog eens naar Europa komen. Tijd om haar eindelijk eens live aan het werk te zien. (BV)
