MARISA YEAMAN - Roadmap Heart

The lists of 2008 are now behind us and we cast our hopes towards 2009, that it may be another year of surprises and musical highlights. The first impulses are already good, because there is a new Bruce Springsteen album, but also new Pierce Pettis and Grant Campbell, and then as well, some somewhat lesser known acts to highlight.

Where were the surprises in 2008, who brought inspiration, dynamics or authenticity? My personal tastes increasingly differ from country related music, and it shifts more toward folk and blues orientated singer songwriters. I lean toward musicians who rely on their own impulses and show courage in their own creative ability.

One example, and in my opinion the finest CD of 2008 of a female artist, is the CD 'Roadmap Heart' by Marisa Yeaman. It is a CD that I still find extremely pleasant, it stays and grows. Why is that? Hard to say, but certainly a multitude of factors, the most important in my view is that the album is very honest and familiar. The songs are warm and personal, no inflated emotions, but pleasant, direct and real. It is a balanced album. Marisa is a small independent, and with talent and individuality she has self- produced a first class product.

Music connoisseurs who are familiar with Marisa Yeaman's previous album (Pure Motive), I can be assured that this new album contains truly great material. The quality of Marisa's strong first album is even exceeded with this new title, and her reputation is certainly established (I think) with this record. Australia is the ultimate breeding ground of passionate singer-songwriters, thinking of Cyndi Boste and the unusual Sarah McGregor. Company, that after listening to 'Roadmap Heart', Marisa has certainly earned her place amongst. Of course this fine work is not only because of her, but also the top quality musicians she has around her. A beautiful CD by a woman of flesh and blood, music made with passion. The result of perseverence and charm, and thus an excellent beginning of a new year!

De opsommingen van 2008 liggen alweer achter ons en wij werpen onze eerste blikken alweer op 2009. Dat het wederom een jaar mag worden van verrassingen en muzikale hoogstandjes. De eerste impulsen zijn alweer goed, want er komt een nieuwe Bruce Springsteen, maar ook een Pierce Pettis en een nieuwe Grant Campbell om alvast ook de wat mindere goden te belichten. Waar zaten de verrassingen in 2008, wie bracht inspiratie, dynamiek of authenticiteit? Mijn persoonlijke voorkeur wijkt steeds meer af van country gerelateerde muziek, en verschuift als maar meer richting folk en blues georiënteerde singer-songwriters. Een van de uitzonderingen, en wat mij betreft de fijnste CD van 2008 van een vrouwelijke artiest is de plaat Roadmap Heart van Marisa Yeaman. Een CD die ik als uiterst aangenaam, plezierig en verwarmend blijf ervaren Waar zit hem dat in? Moeilijk te zeggen, maar ongetwijfeld een veelvoud aan factoren, waarvan de belangrijkste volgens mij is dat de plaat heel open en ver! trouwd is. De songs zijn warm en dichtbij, geen opgeklopte emoties, maar veelzijdig, direct en reëel. Noem het een plaat in balans. Marisa is een kleine zelfstandige, en weet met haar talent en persoonlijkheid een eerste klas product neer te zetten. Muziekkenners die bekend zijn met Marisa Yeaman’s vorige plaat (Pure Motive) kan ik alvast toevertrouwen dat deze nieuwe plaat ronduit fantastisch materiaal bevat. Marisa’s sterke eerste album wordt kwalitatief overtroffen met deze nieuwe titel, sterker nog haar naam als artiest wordt (volgens mij) gevestigd met deze plaat. Australië is een ultieme broedplaats van gedreven singer-songwriters, denk hierbij aan Cyndi Boste, en de onbekendere Sarah McGregor. Een rijtje waar ik Marisa Yeaman na het beluisteren van Roadmap Heart tussen plaats. Uiteraard is dit mooie werkje niet uitsluitend vanwege haar eigen inbreng alleen, maar van het kwalitatief sterke team wat zij om zich heen heeft verzameld. Mooie sfeervolle plaat door een vrou! w van vlees en bloed, muziek met warmte gemaakt. Een resultaat! van doo rzettingsvermogen en charme, een echt vrouwelijke plaat dus en een uitstekend begin van een nieuw jaar! (SMP)
